Or people who know about Porsches.

Did a 2005 Porsche Carrera earlier today, does anyone have a part number for the two little plastic screws that hold down the battery cover.

Also, can someone recommend a good battery replacement?

Looks like the part number is 99757286700 02A - $9.55 USD per locking screw.

As for the battery, I don’t know enough about the UK market to know what the good options are. I have a feeling the manufacturers are fairly localized. My latest go-to in the States is Napa Legend , which is a rebranded East Penn Manufacturing (Deka) battery ( which incidentally, they are made not far from where I grew up, but I digress... )

I think it uses a h7 battery. I would recommend an agm

Cheers for that. $10 per screw, ouch. One of the tabs on the battery cover has partially snapped off, I daren’t think about how much that would cost.

Thanks for that. I was cleaning around the frunk, and noticed the right side screw was missing, thought I’d vacuumed it up when I was cleaning, checked the vacuum, no screw. Turns out it had been missing for a while.

God there was so much leaves and crud underneath that frunk lid.

When the  battery in my 997 finally refused to take a charge, I replaced it with a Bosch AGM unit.

It’s the guys third vehicle. He’s often away from home fitting CCTV cameras around the country, and when he’s home he often uses his BMW 3 Series diesel as his son finds it difficult to get into the back of the Porsche, when the family go out.

So it sits quite a bit, he takes it out for a run from time to time but still the battery either doesn't hold charge or isn't getting sufficient charge when it does get taken out.

It’s an auto.

The screw seems to lock with half a twist.

Sounds like the owner needs a maintainer, keeping the battery at a good level, constantly. Batteries don't like being run down and then charged up. I  don’t own one but this mi ght be helpful.

Thanks, I did suggest one of the new intelligent battery maintainers but h says the car lives outside and doesn’t want to leave the car connected all the time, but he may have to rethink that.

Tell him you’ll drive it regularly for him, and bring it over every couple weeks so he can take it for a spin.

Even if you don’t leave it in all the time. A battery charger/maintainer is a better way to charge up a battery. A low battery, with fixed resistance will mean a higher variable load, so higher current through the starter and alternator.

So if you only drive once a month. charge it up for an hour before starting, for longest battery/electrical life.

Along with S aracen I’d recommend an AGM, they hold up better for storage and , if he does get a charger so make sure it can be used on an agm battery. One thing for AGms is they are more sensative to overcharging, so the charger will need to know when to auto shut off.

You can get solar powered ones which fit to the bottom of the screen with suction cups and plug into the cigarette l ighter socket , so there’s no need for any external wiring and no farting around removing them when you want to use the car . They’re ideal for cars which live outside.

Yes, I would highly recommend a trickle charger.  I had one for my p-car.  IMO it’s mandatory for 997's in particular.

That’s the right part number but it seems to have been superseded by a new part number in 03/19 : 99757286701 02A (the 02A is the color code but it seems that only this one is available, at least for this model and year).

In case it’s of interest to anybody, there is a free online ETKA (the official VW parts nomenclature software) alternative that i have been using for years : IFI Interface CarProg2.

To use it :

Go to https://ifinterface.com/page/page3.php?langid=1

Click on CarProg2

Select “Porsche”, “997-1" as the model then select the year on the right (2005 in this case) by clicking the “purple” on the right of the year

Select “8 - Body”

Select “813-020 - Particulate filter Cover for Scuttle”

Click on the part you need (“18" in this case)

You can see that there are multiple entries for the part “18" with subpart for each color variants, select the “black” version of the oldest part and you will have an information in the popup that there is a new P/N for it, you can click on it and have the new P/N and the “official” price of the part

ps: it’s often useful to have the older and newer version of parts (and know which part of the P/N is for the color code so you can find used or compatible parts with more ease (and sometime validate if a part is compatible or not) .
